Subject Descriptions

Good communication is critical to successful massage therapy and goes beyond hello and goodbye. In this subject you’ll cover essentials like communication, goal setting, scope of practice, medical terminology, client screening, record keeping, ethics, legal considerations, occupational health and safety and symptomology of common contraindications. Importantly, students learn how to tailor their treatment to different client’s needs.

This subject covers everything you’ll need to know about cells, tissues, and the integration and control of the 11 major systems of the body. It also provides students with an in-depth knowledge of bone and muscle anatomy, including bony landmarks, insertion, action, and innervation of 63 major muscles. This is foundational knowledge all qualified massage therapists are expected to know. Nutrition and energy systems are also covered.

A comprehensive overview of the full body massage sequence. Learn 140 Swedish strokes to help clients reduce stress, improve circulation, and enhance relaxation. Treating special needs clients such as pregnant women, elderly, young and people with disabilities, is included as well as corporate seated massage.

Get a behind the scenes look at what goes into establishing and managing your own massage clinic. Learn core business practices like sales and marketing strategies, business finance, customer services excellence, personal, professional development and leadership.

Learn both active and passive stretching techniques to treat the body’s major muscle groups. The knowledge in this subject allows graduates to extend their therapy options and deliver home care to clients as well as assisting injury prevention. Thermal therapies such as the use of heat and ice are also covered.

Thai massage involves deep passive stretching combined with slow, sustained compression. Students learn how both the client and therapist produce muscular release through deep stretching. This is one of the most popular forms of massage, with clients finding Thai Massage uplifting and energising.

Based on traditional Eastern practices around holistic health, reflexology provides students with an introduction to alternative medicines. Reflexology can be used on its own or in combination with other massage techniques. This subject helps to give graduates of the Cert IV exposure to the broadest range of treatment options and equip them with the experience necessary to take on a range of future professional opportunities.

One of the most critical parts of the overall course – clinical practice provides students with the opportunity to plan, market and provide over 60 hours of massage treatment to the public. This is a core component to completing the Cert IV and making the first moves of their own career by building a client base.

Please note: Before you can graduate from this course you must first complete a current Senior First Aid course. First Aid (HLTAID003) is not available to complete online and must be completed via an on-campus program. This course is available to be completed at a Q Academy campus (Brisbane, Gold Coast or Sunshine Coast).

What You’ll Need

The majority of this course is completed through online learning so access to a good internet connection and a computer/tablet with camera and microphone access is essential.

It’s also recommended that you acquire a good massage table. Net Q recommends Athlegen or Firm ‘n’ Fold if you haven’t already got one. In any case, your trainer can assist you with more advice if needed.

Lastly, you’ll need to find some people to practice on! Friends and family are great if you’re just starting out and you can find other people by offering free massages as you gain more confidence.

Once you have finalised the online components of the course, you will need to complete at least 60 hours of clinical practice on-campus at one of a number of our support locations. This is the only component of the course which requires in-person training. This is to ensure our coaches and students have a chance to directly refine the techniques learned over the length of the course.

Completing the practical component of the course can usually be completed within two weeks full-time. You can choose to attend one of our primary clinic locations at Brisbane (Newstead or Indooroopilly), Gold Coast (Robina Town Centre) or Sunshine Coast (Maroochydore). Or, from one of our secondary clinics in Sydney (Mona Vale or Brookvale). Equipment needed such as an oil bottle, holster and student shirt are all provided by Net Q on-campus.

Online Support

As the majority of the course is delivered online, Net Q has committed itself to provide the best learning environment possible. Content is presented in a digital manual, with classes presented by our experienced trainers via short videos to guide you every step of the way.

One-on-one sessions with a trainer and assessor via Skype are also used to help prepare you for any assessment tasks. These sessions provide students with the opportunity to ask questions, receive feedback and demonstrate their knowledge without ever leaving the house.
